Home Again (from France)

After seventeen glorious days in France, we are home again. I am sorting through hundreds of photos and tons of information to share. The weather was gorgeous and the people were friendly. We had only 2 1/2 days of rain. The other days, it was sunny and warm—highs ranged from 60°F up to 80° F! We met "virtual" friends, from travel blogs and forums, in person. A great time! Stay tuned...

As for writing about the garden here at home—after I do a lot of weeding...

Are all of your senses engaged in the here and now? Over five lovely days in Hawaii, I didn't spend hours attached to my cell phone or my computer. The Musician and I wanted to be outside—walking, seeing and being in the moment. As a writer, I pay attention to detail and mentally describe what I'm seeing and hearing. As a gardener, I pay attention to the landscape—trees, flowers, birds and the sky. As a traveler, I revel in the experience of "just being" in a place. Artists painting by the ocean. Diamond Head. November 2012 We walked along Diamond Head Road in Honolulu and stopped to watch a group of artists. The billowing bronze grass is pressed down, creating a path that leads a tree-shaded spot on the cliff above the blue ocean. Umbrellas are poised, protecting the canvases from the glare of the morning sun while the artists wear broad-brimmed hats to shield their faces. What do I see? Seeking shade. Favorite Garden Photos of 2011

There's much to enjoy (and learn) from reviewing garden photos. Here are a few of my favorites from 2011 that I love for the colors. Some photos were taken near while others far away. Weeded, Mulched and Waiting for Blooms in the Cottage Garden

The cottage garden, bare compared to previous springs,  is ready and waiting for blooms. April 27, 2013. Any complaints about the weather where you garden? The cool temperatures, while delaying the blooms, provided the perfect weather for preparing the garden. I don't feel as rushed this year and gardening has been more enjoyable. It isn't ninety degrees already. Sixty and seventy degree weather could be worse as other parts of the country have been flooded and experienced late snows. Looking at photos from 2006-2012, peak spring bloom in the cottage garden happened in the first week of April.  Still waiting for blooms, but the plant foliage looks healthier and happier than ever. The centaura varieties (in the photo below) were tiny new plants in 2012, and now, they're starting out huge! In a future post, I'll tell you more about  centaurea gymnocarpa "Velvet Centaurea" as it blooms. It's one of my new favorites and hope it meets my expectations. Silver l...
